Book Description: Writing is not like chemical engineering. The figures of speech should not be learned the same way as the periodic table of elements. This is because figures of speech are not about hypothetical structures in things, but about real potentialities within language and within ourselves. The "figurings" of speech reveal the apparently limitless plasticity of language itself. We are inescapably confronted with the intoxicating possibility that we can make language do for us almost anything we want. Or at least a Shakespeare can. The figures of speech help to see how he does it, and how we might. Therefore, in the chapters presented in this volume, the quotations from Shakespeare, the Bible, and other sources are not presented to exemplify the definitions. Rather, the definitions are presented to lead to the quotations. And the quotations are there to show us how to do with language what we have not done before. They are there for imitation.

Book Description: The Renaissance saw a renewed and energetic engagement with classical rhetoric; recent years have seen a similar revival of interest in Renaissance rhetoric. As Renaissance critics recognised, figurative language is the key area of intersection between rhetoric and literature. This book is the first modern account of Renaissance rhetoric to focus solely on the figures of speech. It reflects a belief that the figures exemplify the larger concerns of rhetoric, and connect, directly or by analogy, to broader cultural and philosophical concerns within early modern society. Thirteen distinguished contributors have selected a rhetorical figure with a special currency in Renaissance writing, and have used it as a key to one of the period's characteristic modes of perception, forms of argument, states of feeling, or styles of reading.

Book Description: The author argues that Indiana's strident visual language emerges from his tendency to recast his life in story and verse, a fact that unlocks complex and secret tissues of figurative meaning within the deceptively simple canvases. By illuminating the enigmas in Indiana's word and image combinations, she helps to explain the longevity of LOVE and its influence on a later generation of artists."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description: This book exemplifies, analyses and describes different types of figurative meanings, or tropes, and rhythmical schemes in natural verbal language. It should be of interest to anyone who looks for linguistically oriented information about these questions. The book focuses on figurative language in standard English, but the analyses and explanations given should be valid also for other languages. Simile, personification, oxymoron, hyperbole, understatement, symbolic language and punning are dealt with, and there is a chapter on rhythmical schemes, but the main part of the book is about metaphor and metonymy, including synecdoche. A number of theoretical attempts at explaining the character of these tropes are described and discussed. A more comprehensive analytical perspective is argued for, however. Metaphorical and metonymic uses clearly connect to cognition and experience in general in a creative way, but in this study it is also pointed out that there are obvious parallels between metaphor and metonymy and the non-figurative types of relations in language systems termed hyponymy and meronymy. Accordingly, language users seem to operate with general types of semantic strategies.

Book Description: Over the past two hundred years, thousands of ancient Greek vases have been unearthed. Yet these artifacts remain a challenge: what did the images depicted on these vases actually mean to ancient Greek viewers? In this long-awaited book, Gloria Ferrari uses Athenian vases, literary evidence, and other works of art from the Archaic and Classical periods (520-400 B.C.) to investigate what these items can tell us about the ancient Greeks—specifically, their notions of gender. Ferrari begins by developing a theoretical perspective on visual representation, arguing that artistic images give us access to how their subjects were imagined rather than to the way they really were. For instance, Ferrari's examinations of the many representations of women working wool reveal that these images constitute powerful metaphors—metaphors, she argues, which both reflect and construct Greek conceptions of the ideal woman and her ideal behavior. From this perspective, Ferrari studies a number of icons representing blameless femininity and ideal masculinity to reevaluate the rites of passage by which girls are made ready for marriage and boys become men. Representations of the nude male body in Archaic statues known as kouroi, for example, symbolize manhood itself and shed new light on the much-discussed institution of paiderastia. And, in Ferrari's hands, imagery equating maidens with arable land and buried treasure provides a fresh view of Greek ideas of matrimony. Innovative, thought-provoking, and insightful throughout, Figures of Speech is a powerful demonstration of how the study of visual images as well as texts can reshape our understanding of ancient Greek culture.

Book Description: From street fashion to high culture the work of Virgil Abloh, a celebrated young multiphenate artist, is showcased in this lavishly illustrated book. Virgil Abloh's story is both quintessentially and subversively American. Born to Ghanaian parents in Rockford, Illinois, he launched his career as a member of Kanye West s creative team in 2002. Ever since, his diverse professional and artistic endeavors have spanned work at Fendi, art directing musical albums, launching a sports-inspired fashion label, developing a multi-platform brand, starting a furniture collection, launching a collaborative exhibition with Takashi Murakami, publishing a song, and forming a partnership with Nike. Most recently he was named artistic director at Louis Vuitton and performed at Lollapalooza. This multi-faceted and vibrant book accompanies the first retrospective of his work, which is being presented in his hometown of Chicago in 2019. Images of his creations in the world of fashion, furniture, graphic arts, architecture, and collaborations with other artists are accompanied by essays that view his work through the lens of the African diaspora and explore his remarkable fluidity between high and low culture. At the core of this book is Abloh's deep interest in empowering young people, an optimistic stance that reflects his generous energy and willingness to turn the status quo on its head. AUTHOR: Michael Darling is James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Previously, Darling was the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum; he was also an associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. 275 colour images
